On February 10, 2026 the small community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia had to contend with the unimaginable—a mass shooting attack which left 9 dead (including the shooter), and 27 injured. The victims were primarily children.
Another harm was borne out of this tragedy; based on the research conducted and contained in this report, social media and online content generated by various entities is indicative of the shooting being used by many to spread discrimination and hate against transgender people.
This content overwhelmingly focused on the transgender identity of the shooter. Often, content would denigrate and deny the existence of all transgender persons. For example, describing them as mentally ill, inherently dangerous, a constant threat to children, and responsible for a wave of violence and/or terrorism.
This report focuses on the narratives shared by several far-right media outlets and high-profile influencers in the 72 hours following the initial RCMP alert.

The statements published are reflective of an attempt to use a reprehensible act of violence to promote demonization and discrimination.
The quotes presented in this report could be compared against the Hallmarks of Hate and decisions by the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal, which found that certain narratives about transgender persons constitute hate speech.
The Canadian Anti-Hate Network extends our deepest condolences and solidarity with all those impacted, especially the families of the children who lost their lives. May their memories be a blessing:
