Evan Balgord
Executive Director
The next federal election will be held on April 28.
During the election we will continue to report on far-right movements which harbour racism and other forms of hate that are incompatible with our multicultural and pluralistic democracy.
The Canadian Anti-Hate Network is an independent and nonpartisan organization. That means that we do not take direction from, or endorse, candidates or political parties.
Any time a candidate, a leader, or political agents are expressing support for far-right movements, politics, or policy, it is within our mandate to highlight that and explain the context.
This is so important, especially as people are realizing that so much of the pain and worry we are experiencing right now is a consequence of the United States electing a far-right administration.
Our work might be inherently political, but it has never been partisan.
Every word we publish is scrutinized by people who want to see our organization fail. We have been the subject of multiple access to information requests and a “fishing expedition” lawsuit. There is no evidence of CAHN undertaking partisan activity, because we don’t.
As I stated in a sworn statement in 2022, “CAHN is an independent organization and has never taken direction from any political party or its agents. CAHN has never and will never accept funding that comes with conditions which would impact its independence.”
That continues to be true.
People who claim we work for a particular political party are lying.
Members of our board or staff may endorse or support candidates or political parties in a personal capacity during the election. If they choose to do that, they will not be doing it on behalf of the Canadian Anti-Hate Network, they cannot use our name, and it will not be during working hours. CAHN has asked them to be very clear, if they undertake any partisan activity, that they are operating in a personal capacity at all times.
The Canadian Anti-Hate Network cannot and will not tell you how to vote. However, we do encourage you to share our articles and talk to family, friends, and coworkers. Please have conversations about how the far-right hurts all of us, especially people who are targeted by hate.
These conversations strengthen our democracy. People should be able to judge every candidate, leader, and party by their level of support for, or opposition to, the far-right – whether that’s the Trump administration or far-right movements here at home.
