A small library in rural Alberta has been under attack since 2023. Now, the town council has voted to close the library and relocate it, diminished in size, to a not-yet-built school.
Last week, the Fifth Estate aired a documentary about the Valleyview Municipal Library, in Valleyview, Alberta. What we learned was shocking: the slow takeover of a town by far-right municipal councillors, and the shuttering of a local library, seemingly with the goal of preventing what they believe is the spread of “gender ideology.”
In reality, the small library offers support and a place for the town’s Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) to play board games and eat pizza, and carries books that reflect the lived experiences of those same kids.
The far-right of Valleyview have taken up a lot of space and delivered a blow to the safety and dignity of all queer and trans members of the community.
But we know that you, and the majority of people living in Canada, don't want to see public libraries close. You don’t want to see 2SLGBTQ+ youth lose their community spaces.
We know that coast to coast to coast many small, rural, and northern communities have vibrant cultures of social justice and diversity. We believe that a future like that can exist for Valleyview too.
This is where you come in. We want to show the staff of Valleyview Municipal Library, and all the kids who feel safe there, that they matter and that Canadians care about them.
So what are we asking? It's simple.

Theo, the GSA’s founder, told the CBC, “My idea of common ground is being able to exist in this community.”
Help us tell Theo and her friends that people all over the country support them in that vision.
